Delta Packaging Services optimises overseas concept for longitudinal shafts
One core requirement of the customer was that one person must be in a position to erect and assemble the packaging on their own. No easy task when it comes to the optimisation of overseas transport packaging for drive shafts. The client: an internationally active supplier of knuckles and shafts for the vehicle industry. The previous packaging caused high transport and storage costs due to its high-volume EPS padding. Disposal was also made more difficult by the use of this padding, which prevented single-material disposal.
The DELTA Team was therefore not only required to ensure simple integration into the production flow and the protection and safety of the components to be packed. Energy efficiency and sustainability criteria also had to be fulfilled.
The packaging experts first carried out a thorough analysis on behalf of the client. In this, processes were examined and optimisation approaches were worked out. The previous outer packaging (ring, bottom, lid) had to continue to be used in these.
Building on this, DELTA developed a single-material solution entirely out of corrugated cardboard.
Two major challenges normally arise in the switch from reusable to single-use packaging. Either designs that are very complex to erect are required or the capacity utilisation per packaging unit decreases, sometimes substantially. In the new solution, thanks to bits-and-pieces trays and simple U cuts, an extremely simple layout is possible together with a capacity utilisation identical to that of the initial concept.
Overall, a safe, compact and highly efficient packaging solution was created, which reduces transport costs to the customer due to flat delivery and can easily be disposed of.
